Because Internet. Because fun. Selected notes on the typosphere from the Madam Mayo blog archive 2016-2021
Round about 1988, when I tossed my typewriter for the wordprocessor, I thought I was zooming into the future, never to look back. Never say never, as they say. Today while I use a MacBook Pro and various software programs for most of my work, as I draft my book in-progress, and sometimes for poetry and personal letters as well, I use a typewriter. Most people would probably consider using a typewriter (manual, no less!) an eccentricity on par with riding around in a buggy pulled by a horse. Well, bless ’em, and any horses, too, but my experience has taught me that the typewriter is a excellent tool for sharpening one’s concentration, and for maintaining a more minimal level of “minimal digitalism,” to use Cal Newport’s term, which I consider a core strategy for well-being, creativity, and productivity. That said, some typewriting, including my own, ends up in blogs, video, social media… it’s a kind of carousel in the funhouse!
